Term 2 is marching on with lots of fun learning happening in the classrooms and social events to welcome our fabulous parent body back on site. The Open Classrooms and Mother’s Day morning were very successful, and I thank everyone who contributed to making these events so special. In regard to learning, Year 5/6 are budding scientists exploring how can the state of materials be changed and manipulated, and what is the result of combining materials? Years 3 and 5 are busy completing NAPLAN assessments, while Year 4 are learning about the natural vegetation types of Australia, investigating the ways vegetation is used by animals in the environment and the ways people use natural resources. Year 2 are learning to play songs with the Boom Whackers and Kinder and Year 1 are learning to read and spell and write simple sentences correctly (capital letters, full stops, finger spaces between words, use nouns, verbs and adjectives). So we are all very busy doing exactly what we should – learning lots and having fun doing it.
Have a fun weekend with your beautiful children.

Exciting News – hard work by P&F pays off!!
Our amazing P&F have worked very hard over the past 3 years supporting the school in many and varied ways. One way is fundraising, and it is with great excitement we can announce that in partnership with the school, funds have been made available and approved, to enable the school hall to have a complete Audio-Visual system installed in the school hall. This is at a cost of $32 thousand dollars. This will provide the school with facilities for our assemblies, book week parades, concerts, etc etc, to be conducted so that student voices can be heard, and music played at these events. Parents who have attended past concerts and functions have long commented on the fact that students performing or staff talking could not be heard. Well thanks to the hard work of the entire school community we will now have a hall that can accommodate a variety of school and social events for the benefit of all. Well done St Kevin’s P&F and thank you!
P&F BBQ
Saturday afternoon May 15 at Edwards Park, 1 Second Street Booragul, is shaping up to be a fun afternoon with many parents coming together to share a sausage sandwich and fun and games in the park. Thank you to the P&F social committee for organising.
Flood relief – out of Uniform Day
Come dressed as a farmer next Friday as we raise funds to support SVDP Flood Appeal. Gold coin donation. Can’t wait to see what the teachers wear!

Robotics
Our Robotics’ Club kicks off at 3pm next week. For students in Year 4/5/6 could parents please ensure that students have downloaded the software to make this easier next week, otherwise we might spend a significant amount of the allocated time just downloading software?. I have already completed this for Year 4 students. If students are confused or need assistance please encourage your child to see me in break times or before school and I will help.
We had 25 students apply and I have accepted all nominations. If your child has not passed on their letter or there is a problem please contact me kim.hogan@mn.catholic.edu.au
On Tuesday afternoon children will be seated on the steps for “carline” pickup from 4:30pm. If you need to pick up earlier you will need to come to the Owl Room to collect.
Mother’s Day
Thanks for the huge support of our Mother’s Day fundraiser, liturgy and morning tea. There was some angst expressed informally on the day as the children were not allowed to stay and participate in the morning tea with their mothers. There are a multiplicity of reasons for this including Health and Safety reasons ( hot beverages, allergies, teacher’s responsibility for all students – line of sight), cost and logistics. However, our principle concern is equity and justice. All mothers are unable to be present. If we allowed the children whose mums are present to remain and enjoy a treat, then we are left with students languishing in the classroom unable to enjoy the same privileges as their classmates. This is not fair! And, as I said before, a seated morning tea for all mums, grandmas, and 120 students is outside our capabilities and has WHS issues. Instead, over the years we have seen our Mother’s Day morning tea as a community building exercise wherein we can acknowledge and thank our Mums - giving them some time to kick back and chat with other Mums/Grandmothers of St Kevin’s.
Crunch and Sip Mathematics Sessions
We are looking for feedback. Last night we set up for our Infants and Primary Sessions for Crunch and Sip but only had 2 parents turn up for our Infants session. No takers for Primary?.
Crunch and Sip Maths is a response to a parent request for some assistance in helping your children with Mathematics at home. Can you please complete the survey (see link below) to help us understand whether this is something is wanted by our St Kevin’s community. This survey should only take 30 seconds to complete. ( I’ve had someone test it for me?)
Mini Vinnies
The Mini Vinnies Team are very excited for our week-long fundraising effort for the children affected by the floods from our sister school, St. Joseph’s, Wingham. A massive thank you to all the families who have sent in items for the stall next week, your generosity is very much appreciated. Items will be for sale each recess each day. We will pop photos of the children enjoying the special treats on Facebook. We are beyond excited for our farmer-themed out of uniform day on Friday. Don’t forget your coins, kids!
Well-Being Week
Next week, the staff and students will participate in Well-Being Week. Well-Being Week ties in perfectly with our Mini Vinnies Flood Relief Initiative this term! The 5 ways to Well-being are Connect, Get Active, Be Mindful, Keep Learning and Give to Others.
We will Connect as a school community by creating a collaborative artwork.
We will Get Active with a lunchtime disco.
We will practice Being Mindful through prayer, a colouring in and peaceful music.
We will Keep Learning about how to look after our own well-being and the well-being of others with special in-class activities and
Our entire week is dedicated to Giving to Others through our Mini Vinnies Fundraiser.
Well-Being Week might be something you would like to take part in as a family.
- A small moment of prayer before dinner or bed
- An extra-long cuddle
- A family walk on the beach before our afternoons get too cold
Enjoy!
The Month of Mary
May is the Month of Mary.
Mary is in an instrumental part of our Catholic Identity.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the beauty of Spring is in full swing. Spring is a time of nature renewing itself. Likewise, Mary gave new life to the world when she gave birth to Jesus, our saviour. Many people pray to Mary and ask for her comfort during the most difficult times in their lives, just as a child turns to their own mother when things are hard for them.
What are we learning in Religion?

Yaama,
National Reconciliation Week each year is celebrated from 27 May to 3 June.
This year’s theme is ‘More than a Word, Reconciliation Takes Action’.
Why these dates, 27 May to 3 June?
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the 1967 Referendum acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively.
National Reconciliation Week is preceded by National Sorry Day on 26 May. National Sorry Day helps people come together to reflect on the past but also talk about what is needed to bring healing to the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
The following message and short video clip from Reconciliation Australia outlines and explains this year’s theme.
National Reconciliation Week 2021 Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021, More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples…. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. 2021 marks 20 years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal Reconciliation process. (Reconciliation Australia website). |
St Kevin’s Primary School will commemorate Reconciliation Week in Week 6 of this term, with a prayer service and a variety of in-class activities for children.
More information to come soon.
Take care, and God bless.

Readers Theatre
Susan read to some children in lunch club. They listened to Susan read and coloured in while listening. Fantastic reading Susan!
Each Wednesday children can offer to read to a small group. Mrs Arthur has kindly offered to let them use the Year 4 classroom so it’s a quieter environment for reading.
Please add your name to the list in the library if you would like to read a book to an audience.
Happy Mother’s Day
Kindergarten logged onto the computer with the help of their buddies. Using Paint 3D they created a picture of their mum. They were encouraged to use shapes like triangles, circles and squares.
Below are some of their Paint 3D pictures. They are super cute.
If you need help with anything or have misplaced a password please contact me.
Many thanks

We are still waiting for size 6 long sleeve boy’s shirts, size 10 boys and girl’s trousers and today, sold out of elastic ties. We have plenty of standard ties in stock. We have been in constant communication with our suppliers who have been experiencing ongoing issues due to covid.
We are expecting these items and more in the next week and appreciate your patience until they arrive.
In the interim students can wear their short sleeve shirts under the school jumper along with their school tie. Again, thank you for your patience.
We will send a compass alert as soon as items become available.
Due to an unexcepted event at Speers Point Park the P&F Family BBQ will be held at Edwards Park at 1 Second Street Booragul. This is a 2-minute drive from Speers Point Park. There is plenty of grass for the children to play and a great bike track. Bring your picnic rug and a packed basket and relax with a beautiful waterfront view and a sausage.
